MOURINHO REJECTS BAN, SACARSTICALLY BLASTS FA
manager Jose Mourinho
has denied a charge of
misconduct levelled against him
by England's governing Football
Association folowing comments
he made after the Premier
League title-chasers shock loss to Sunderland.
The Black Cats ended Mourinho's 77-match
unbeaten home league run as Chelsea manager
with a stunning 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge
last month.
Afterwards, Mourinho mocked the officials by
saying: "Congratulations to (referee) Mike
Dean, because he made a fantastic performance.
"And congratulations to Mike Riley (head of
refereeing body Professional Game Match
Officials Limited), because what they did
during the season was fantastic for the way
the championship is going.
"So congratulations to all of them, and I have
nothing more to say. I'm sorry."
During the course of the match the Portuguese
boss's assistant Rui Faria angrily confronted
the match officials on the touchline and had to
be restrained by several Chelsea staff,
including Mourinho, before he was sent off.
Monday saw Faria admit to two FA charges of
misconduct after Chelsea midfielder Ramires
had already received a retrospective four-match
ban, ending his domestic season, for swinging
an arm and striking Sunderland's Sebastian
Larsson during the April 19 match.
A FA statement said: "Jose Mourinho has denied
an FA charge and requested a non-personal
hearing in relation to comments he made
following Chelsea's game against Sunderland
on April 19, 2014.
"It is alleged that Mourinho's post-match
comments constitute improper conduct, in that
they call into question the integrity of the
referee appointed to the above fixture (Mike
Dean) and/or the integrity of Mr Mike Riley,
general manager of the Professional Game
Match Officials Limited, and/or the comments
bring the game into disrepute.
"In relation to the same fixture, Chelsea
assistant manager Rui Faria has admitted two
misconduct breaches and requested a non-
personal hearing.
"The first breach was that Faria used abusive
and/or insulting words towards the fourth
official (Phil Dowd). The second breach was
that Faria's behaviour following the match
referee's request that he leave the technical
area amounted to improper conduct.
"A date for both hearings will be set in due
course."
Mourinho has already been sent off at both
Cardiff and Aston Villa this season.
Speaking about his latest brush with authority
on Friday, Mourinho said: "Every time I speak
there is a consequence. Even if I say that a
referee was amazing that was a reason to be
with a charge.
"I can't say the truth. I don't feel free at all. If
you want a better press conference, speak with
the FA.
"I told the referee he was amazing, and I
repeat: the referee was amazing."
Mourinho was also bitterly sarcastic regarding
Ramiers's ban, by saying: "He's a lucky guy.
We accept the charge because we are happy
with it."
As for the prospect of another fine, Mourinho
said: "When I have to give money, I prefer to
do it privately.
"My wife says that charity is anonymous. I
prefer to do that than give money because
people decide to take money out of my pocket."
Chelsea, now just two points behind Liverpool
in the Premier League title race after a 2-0 win
at Anfield on Sunday, face Atletico Madrid in
the second leg of a currently goalless
Champions League semifinal at Stamford Bridge
on Wednesday.
BANANA THROWER ON XAVI ARRESTED
Spanish police said Wednesday
they had arrested a spectator
suspected of hurling a banana at
Barcelona's Brazilian defender
Dani Alves, a slur that sparked a
worldwide anti-racist uproar.
"The person has been detained," a police
spokesman told AFP without giving further
details.
A fan threw a banana onto the pitch near the
30-year-old Brazilian international as he was
about to take a corner during Barcelona's away
match against Villareal on Sunday night.
Alves won praise for his reaction, picking up
the banana to take a bite before getting on
with the game and setting up a goal in
Barcelona's dramatic come-from-behind 3-2
victory.
The incident sparked worldwide indignation,
with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and
Fifa president Sepp Blatter joining the anti-
racist condemnation.
Villarreal said they had identified the fan who
threw the banana, withdrawn his club
membership and permanently banned him from
their ground.

FIFA INVESTIGATES NIGERIA ON MATCH FIXING
Fifa has opened an investigation
into allegations by convicted
match-fixer Wilson Perumal Raj,
that he helped Nigeria qualify
for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
In his book released last Monday, the 48-year-
old Singaporean revealed how he met with a
Nigeria Football Federation official to try and
fix games so that Super Eagles could top their
group.
He also stated in his book that he had an
agreement with the Nigerian federation that he
would organise friendly matches for its men's
national team as well as some percentage of
whatever Fifa pays the country in lieu of
qualifying.
NFF spokesperson, Ademola Olajire confirmed
Fifa are looking into the matter with full
cooperation from the federation.
Olajire affirmed that the NFF has received
correspondence from the football ruling body
related to the case and are watching tapes of
the games Nigeria played during the qualifying
series for the 2010 World Cup.
"We have forwarded the letter to our match-
fixing officer Dr. Mohammed Sanusi and NFF's
Integrity Officer Dr. Christian Emeruwa. All
enquiries should now go to Fifa as I explained
in my earlier release on the matter," Olajire
said.
The NFF had in an earlier release condemned
the allegations, citing it as a figment of
imagination of a convicted felon.
"Perumal's statements are a hogwash and have
no legs to stand on. We have ordered the book
itself with a view to digesting it and looking
critically at it," NFF General Secretary,
Barrister Musa Amadu said on Tuesday.
" If the book impugns on the image of the
Nigeria Football Federation, our players and
the larger image of our dear country, we will
take appropriate action."
Nigeria qualified for the 2010 Fifa World Cup
ahead of Tunisia, Mozambique and Kenya in the
final rounds of the Africa zone of qualifying.
BENFICA TO PLAY SEVILLA IN EUROPA CUP FINAL
Benfica and Sevilla reached the
Europa League final on
Thursday, further cementing an
Iberian grip on the continent's
game.
In a week which had already seen Real Madrid
and Atletico Madrid set up a Champions League
title showdown, Europe's second-tier
tournament followed a similar script.
Benfica, runners-up to Chelsea in last year's
final, weathered a Juventus onslaught in Turin
to hold out for a 0-0 draw and a 2-1 semifinal
aggregate win.
They ensured the stalemate despite having Enzo
Perez sent off for a second bookable offence
with 23 minutes to play.
The Portuguese side restricted the Italians to
only a handful of serious opportunities as
Juventus failed to score at home for the first
time in 25 matches this season.
The loss also denied Juventus, who are heading
for the Serie A title this season, the
opportunity to play the May 14 final on their
home ground.
